    As things stand, the West isn’t prepared to back the fractured Syrian opposition and it seemingly doesn’t want to risk the Muslim Brotherhood gaining power as is happening in Egypt. However, the damage to the Iran-led bloc from Assad’s fall would be massive, so to my mind, active support for the opposition is worth any such risk. The big mystery is why Western leaders don’t see it that way. It can’t just be due to the Russian naval base at Tartous.
